I still cannot see or hear any trade representatives. There must be a chain from wholesalers to retailers who have been traditionally selling benarasi saris. The traditional networks have to be understood. These guys are the ones who are selling the Chinese copies now. If you want to bypass traditional retail and get to big stores who rarely deal in saris as one needs big range and selling stratagems of saris is different from selling jeans, craft NGO's and craft councils have to do exhibitions with Westside, Shoppers Stop, Pantaloon.
The actual logistics about how to do it...people like Shashiv Chandran of Utsav who do big sari exhibitions and understand the market have to be contacted.
Every cluster needs a lobby group and some organization to coordinate all the activities. The core problem lies in being able to find a prime mover based out of Benares. I think first a coalition of stores who will brand and sell pure benarasi needs to be created to be the front face.
I feel that the craft activists account for minimal sales maximum talk...like public private partnerships there needs to be much more engagement between stores, designers, craft activists and the government. As one can sell others can mostly develop and research.
